WSA Yorkton 95-04B

The City of Yorkton is the largest community in Saskatchewan relying on groundwater and utilizes several well fields and aquifers for its municipal water supply.  In order to better understand the aquifers providing the City’s groundwater supply the Yorkton Aquifer Management Plan was initiated in the 1990’s.  As part of this work a number of observation wells were installed and nine of these were incorporated into the network.   

Observation well WSA Yorkton 95-04B was constructed in 1995 to a depth of 13.79 metres in sand and gravel.  It is located in the Logan East well field between Yorkton Creek and Yorkton’s production well #011.  Its purpose is to obtain long term water level records for the Logan aquifer system and to relate these water level fluctuations to both climate and withdrawals. 

WSA Yorkton 95-04B appears to be influenced by Yorkton Creek and production well #001 and its hydrograph is characterized by large water level fluctuations that may exceed four metres.  The lowest water level recorded was about 493 metres in 2004, while the highest was just over 499.5 metres in 2011.

Water from WSA Yorkton 95-04B does not have a dominant cation while bicarbonate is the dominant anion.  The water has a sum of ions concentration of 1030 mg/L.
