WSA Conquest No.503

As part of the Conquest Reservoir Site Evaluation study, five observation wells were constructed in 1971 to study the influence of the proposed reservoir and irrigation projects on groundwater levels.  After suspension of the project, the wells were  incorporated into the observation well network in 1972.  WSA Conquest No. 503 is located immediately adjacent to the reservoir site and its purpose is to observe groundwater level fluctuations in surficial stratified drift of the Saskatoon Group.  Conquest 503 is completed to a depth of 7.85 metres.  Water infiltrating the surficial drift will have a lateral flow component toward the reservoir site and a downward flow component toward the Tyner Valley aquifer.

The hydrograph shows strong annual water level fluctuations with annual minimums typically occurring in late March and maximums occurring in June.  The minimum water level of about 566.8 metres occurred in 1972 while the record peak of about 569.4 metres occurred in 2012.  The 2013 peak was just below this at about 569.3 metres.  While this well shows significant variations in water levels with annual fluctuations of a metre or more, it also shows an overall increasing trend.

The well yields water of the calcium-sulphate type and has a sum of ions concentration of approximately 1580 mg/L.
