Let’s talk Ag Water Management…
Agriculture is a key driver for our provincial economy. Saskatchewan is known for providing food to the world and having a diverse landscape with abundant forests, lakes, rivers and wetlands. Drainage is an important tool for Saskatchewan farmers to manage water on their land and increase efficiency, profitability and resiliency. Just like any other tool on the farm, understanding how to use it responsibly is important. Producers can manage water to improve farm efficiency and soil health, reduce farm inputs, and increase food production, all while still practicing environmental stewardship and safeguarding against downstream flooding.
AgH2Onward is a free online series of videos and reading materials that will introduce you to responsible water management and how Water Security Agency’s (WSAs) drainage approval process can support you in enhancing your farms efficiency using stewardship-focused mitigation tools.
AgH2Onward was originally developed in 2021 as a cost-shared initiative supported by Natural Resources Canada’s Building Regional Adaptation Capacity and Expertise (BRACE) Program and WSA in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture, Prairie Adaptation Research Collaborative, Prairie Water, Saskatchewan Conservation and Development Association, Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities, and Saskatchewan Association of Watersheds. As of 2025, WSA is the lead agency for H2Onward. The course materials have been updated to reflect WSA’s current programming and policies.
Ag H2Onward Course
This is a free and self-paced course consisting of a series of online videos and reading materials that have been organized into five modules.
You will learn about:
- The Agricultural Water Management Strategy in Saskatchewan
- Effective agricultural water management tools and techniques
- The benefits of getting your drainage projects approved
- The impacts of agricultural drainage
- How to incorporate mitigation strategies to ensure drainage is done responsibly to reduce impacts to water quantity, water quality, wildlife habitat and soil health
- Considerations and regulatory requirements for drainage approvals
- Using a Qualified Person to assist you through the approval process
Every module includes:
- Video lectures that explain the main concepts of the drainage approval process
- Additional materials such as slide decks, fact sheets, reports, and websites that support the content in the video lectures.
