WSA Recognizes World Water Day 2022

Every year on March 22, countries around the world mark World Water Day. The recognition focusses on the sustainable management of freshwater resources, asking all of us to consider responsible water use, water quality and quantity, and water’s role in supporting economic growth and climate change. This year’s World Water Day theme is “Groundwater: making the invisible visible”.

Groundwater is invisible, but its impact is visible everywhere. At least one third of the world’s freshwater supply comes from underground. Groundwater is an extremely important resource across many parts of our province – especially for our rural and agricultural communities. For many, it is their sole source of water for drinking and washing, for farming and manufacturing.

The Water Security Agency has a strong team of engineers and scientists who are committed to ensuring the quality and quantity of our water is sustainable and allowing our province to grow and meet the standards we all expect. We continually test our water and work closely with municipalities, industries and farmers – providing expertise to ensure both ground and surface water sources are maintained in the best possible manner.

Although we are fortunate to enjoy safe, readily available water in Saskatchewan – there is still more work to do.

Our Prairie Resilience climate strategy lays out concrete actions for how our communities can manage water. And we continue to build community awareness, prepare for all eventualities and invest in our vital provincial dam and canal systems.

Water is central to our economy, our communities and our way of life.

We all have a role to play to conserve and protect this precious resource. More information about Saskatchewan’s water source can be found on wsask.ca or search our quick facts here.
