Saskatchewan Recognizes United Nations World Water Day

Today, the Government of Saskatchewan recognizes World Water Day, the annual United Nations observance of the critical nature of fresh water resources around the world.

“Safe, accessible and plentiful fresh water resources are absolutely at the heart of our way of life in this province and Canada,” Minister Responsible for the Water Security Agency Dustin Duncan said.  “It is time to reflect on the tremendous progress we have made on ensuring sustainable water management for our economy, our environment and our way of life, but also to reflect on the work that needs to be done in the future.”

World Water Day focusses on the sustainable management of fresh water resources, and asks countries, communities and individuals to confront issues such as responsible water use, water scarcity, pollution, inadequate water supply, water’s role in supporting economic growth and climate change.

Commemorated since 1993, the theme of World Water Day in 2019 is “Leaving no one behind.”

“World Water Day is a reminder of the proactive steps we can take together,” Duncan said.  “For example, our Prairie Resilience plan put forward concrete action for how we can better manage both droughts and flood conditions moving forward.  We are also making record capital investments on managing our provincial dams and canal systems, necessary for both our economy and our way of life.”

In Saskatchewan, fresh water covers one eighth of the province.  The Saskatchewan River system flows from the Rocky Mountains to Hudson Bay and is the water source for most of our population – including the cities of Regina, Moose Jaw and Saskatoon.
