GOVERNMENT FUNDS LOWER QU’APPELLE RIVER WATERSHED PLAN

July 12, 2013 - Today, Minister Responsible for the Water Security Agency Ken Cheveldayoff released the Lower Qu’Appelle River Watershed Plan and announced $92,500 in funding to the Lower Qu’Appelle Watershed Stewards to implement the plan.

“The Qu’Appelle River Basin is an area that is critical to our continued growth as a province," Cheveldayoff said.  "I am very pleased to announce completion of the Lower Qu’Appelle River Watershed Plan as part of the 25 Year Saskatchewan Water Security Plan.  Source water protection plans let us work with our partners to ensure our water is secure now and into the future.”

The Lower Qu'Appelle River watershed is located in southeastern Saskatchewan and is part of the Qu'Appelle River basin.  It is made up of the lower, or downstream, half of the Qu'Appelle River basin and includes six major lakes along the Qu'Appelle River: Pasqua, Echo, Mission, Katepwa, Crooked and Round.

“The Lower Qu’Appelle River watershed is vital to the province because of the variety of stakeholders and the many interests involved,” Interim Chair of the Lower Qu’Appelle Watershed Stewards Don Jensen said. “I sincerely thank all committee members and the people who advised us.  Together, we made this plan a success.”

This is Saskatchewan’s 11th source water protection plan and includes 65 actions supporting eight goals which address drinking water safety, water quality and quantity, industry practices, upland water management, wastewater management, solid waste management and plan implementation.

The Water Security Agency was created to lead implementation of the 25 Year Saskatchewan Water Security Plan.  It will improve water management capacity and service to individuals, businesses and communities across Saskatchewan.  This new agency brings together, for the first time, all of the major responsibilities related to water quality and quantity.
