Flooding Update - Most areas now declining

July 7, 2014 - All lakes in the Qu’Appelle system have seen peak levels move through and are starting to decline except for Echo and Last Mountain Lake. Crooked and Round Lake has peaked and is declining. The forecasted peak for Last Mountain Lake has been adjusted to 491.6 m, an increase of 0.10 m.

As of this morning Crooked Lake had dropped 29 cm and Round Lake had dropped 4 cm since their peaks. We expect Crooked and Round Lakes to decline by roughly one metre over the next two weeks. These lakes are expected to be above normal for much of the summer.

Quill Lakes
Big Quill Lake is at 520.20 m and Little Quill Lake is at 520.26 m.  The major flows from this rainfall event came into Little Quill and inflows are continuing, though declining.  Water is flowing from Little Quill into Big Quill.  The lakes are expected to equalize at 520.25 m. The previous historical extreme was in 2013 at 519.74 m. The concern in this area is the impact of high water on roads, especially Grid 640 running north from Wynyard.  Wind and wave action can escalate this impact.

Qu’Appelle River near the Village of Tantallon
With Round Lake having exceeded the previous record level set in 1955, the peak level of the Qu’Appelle River at Tantallon expected to exceed the 1955 and the 2011 level by about 0.5 to 0.6 m.  The peak flow is expected at Tantallon today.  Dykes are holding and the Village has equipment on standby to react as necessary. WSA has staff on site to provide assistance.

Assiniboine Watershed
Flows in the  Assiniboine watershed and  Whitesand Rivers are declining. At Kamsack the Assiniboine River peaked yesterday and is now  at 388 m3/s and in recession.

The rate of rise of Fishing Lake is now slowing. The peak level is expected early next week and is not expected to exceed 530.65 m. The current elevation is 530.58 m.

Good Spirit Lake is currently at 485.54 m and continues to creep up, but is not expected to exceed 485.6 m. The record level for Good Spirit Lake is 485.67 m in 2010.
